En route to the wild plains of the Masai Mara, I spent two unforgettable nights at Giraffe Manor—an experience as surreal as it was heartwarming. Nestled in the leafy outskirts of Nairobi, this ivy-clad sanctuary offered a rare kind of intimacy: with giraffes who gently poked their heads through the windows, eager for a treat and utterly unbothered by human company.
What struck me most was their ease—the friendly Rothschild giraffes moved through the property like elegant hosts, comfortable and curious. The juxtaposition of luxury lodging with such close wildlife interaction made Giraffe Manor feel less like a hotel and more like a quiet celebration of co-existence.
Among the most enchanting memories from my stay at Giraffe Manor was the surreal intimacy of interacting with the resident Rothschild giraffes. One moment, stands out: while holding a petal between my lips, only to have a giraffe gracefully lean in and pluck it away with its tongue, which feels like sandpaper. Apparently their tongue is antiseptic.
During breakfast, the giraffes with their long eye lashes would pop their head into the dining hall through the windows and nuzzle up seeking for food. These interactions felt almost choreographed in their tenderness. Sharing space—and petals—with these giants was a reminder of nature’s elegance and the delicate joy of connection.
It wasn’t simply a unique travel experience; it was a moment that rewired how I perceived wildlife interaction. Friendly, intuitive, and unexpectedly playful, these giraffes made Giraffe Manor feel like a sanctuary of wonders.
It was a brief pause before the thrill of the Mara, yet those two days carved a distinct space in memory.
