The Waterbuck Private Camp, Timbavati & Leopard Hill, Sabi Sands

My photography is all due to one Mr Chin Yuen Yin, better known as YY. He is an old friend whom I have travelled with earlier. He has been pestering me to follow him to the safari in Africa for years with the promise that if I visit Africa once, I will surely return again.
My first safari was in 2014, a journey so memorable and close to my heart. Together with YY, Art Ryan, and Christa, we ventured into the wild beauty of South Africa’s Timbavati and Sabi Sands. I came armed with nothing but an entry-level DSLR and the shortest lens among seasoned photographers—a humble beginning, yet one that would ignite my love for photography.
We then left for the second leg of the trip where we were met with more friends of YY and I, who were also enticed by YY. We stayed at the classy and equally luxurious Leopard Hill.
Both camps offer easy sightings of the wild. On certain drive, we were lucky to catch all the Big Five, comprising the lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhinoceros. I recalled watching 6 rhinos drinking from a waterhole and following about 20 wild dogs for a good hour. Wish I had a better camera and lens then.
This trip was more than just a vacation—it was the spark that lit my passion for photography. Through the dust, golden light, and animal encounters, I found myself chasing not just images, but emotion, essence, and connection. That was the moment I knew I’d never see the world the same way again. The bush had spoken—and I was hooked for life.
